Last night, as I sashayed down the steps and into the foyer of one of New York City’s trendiest cocktail bars, The Seville, located at The James – Nomad, I couldn’t help but get a bit overwhelmed by the excitement in the air. The room was filled with people all celebrating this one, truly amazing, #BossLady, who injects inspiration and joy into everything she does.

Caroline Vazzana; fashion editor, stylist, and influencer was celebrating adding yet another impressive accolade to her resume, author. The party was in honor of her inaugural book (I have no doubt there will be more) Making it in Manhattan: The Beginner’s Guide to Surviving & Thriving in the Fashion World. The book, which was inspired by her real life journey climbing through the industry of fashion in New York, is slated to be a guide for those looking to pursue a similar career. Similarly, the book can provide some ethereal look into a world that some may never know, providing a first-hand account of a world that seems so far away.

The woman of the hour rocked a red strapless dress with a stunning pink train, comparable to Miss New York herself, Carrie Bradshaw, who Vazzana is often compared to, along with diamonds from Ring Concierge, the Diamond Producers of America and red Manolo Blahnik heels.

Guests in attendance ranged from high-power editors such as Alexis Bennet of Instyle, and powerhouse fashion designer Nicole Miller. VIP guests were treated to goodie bags with swag from Kendra Scott Jewelry, Kind Lips, Three Olives Vodka Rose, Impress Nails, and Sunday Riley.

I had the honor of chatting with Caroline before her big event, here’s what she had to say:

First of all, congratulations! It’s no easy task to write a book – what did you find the most difficult about the process? What was the most rewarding? 

Thank you! It’s so exciting! The most difficult part of the process was finding the time to write since I was working full-time! I would write during my lunch breaks, commutes, and on weekends. I was so passionate about completing the book that I would write whenever I had a spare second, which was pretty tough when working a full-time job in fashion, but I made it work! The most rewarding part is seeing the final product come to life and getting reactions from my followers. They have already started receiving their copies or getting shipment notifications so it has been so amazing to see and feel their excitement! It’s not just a win for me but for my followers as well. It shows that if you work hard and follow your dreams, anything is possible!

Tell me what the book is about, and what inspired you to write it?

Making it in Manhattan is a behind-the-curtain look at the fashion industry and a great resource for those interested in pursuing a career in fashion. It’s basically a diary of my experience complete with tips and tricks on how to navigate the industry. I was inspired to write it to help others who have big dreams of working in fashion, find a way to make it happen. I wanted to document all of the amazing things I saw and experienced along the way and share them with others!

You, like many other bright-eyed, fashion loving, individuals, came here with a dream to be in the fashion industry; how did you set yourself apart? What steps did you take to make sure you were successful in the industry?

I made sure to start interning and gaining as much experience as I could at a young age. I dedicated every summer and winter break to working in the industry and networking as much as I could. I approached every task with a smile and a positive attitude. There was never a job too big or too small for me. I think my colorful and eclectic style sets me apart from others in the industry as well as my positive attitude.

What’s your advice for someone who is looking to get into the fashion industry now? Especially the print-publication world? 

I would definitely advise interning as much as possible. It is a great way to get first-hand experience and make the right connections. Networking is more important than ever as print jobs are so limited now. If you have a positive attitude and approach everything with a smile, anything is possible. It won’t be easy, there will be long hours, loads of work and not always glamorous but if you work hard, it will all be worth it in the end.

Now for some fun questions. A friend comes in from out of town, where are the top three places you bring her in New York?

Pietro Nolita and Cha Cha Matcha are always my go-tos! They are so fun and colorful. I’d also bring her to Soho to stroll around and shop. The cobblestone streets and buildings are so iconic, so New York!

What is your absolute favorite piece in your closet right now?

My blue Manolo Blahnik Hangisi heels

What are some style tips for a fashionista on a budget? 

Shopping at consignment and vintage stores is a great way to get the look for less. You don’t need a million dollars to have great style. That’s what is so amazing about fashion- there are no rules! Stay true to your own personal style, be confident and add your own flair to each look and you will look amazing in everything!
