Tell me a little about yourself – where are you from? When did you come to New York? Why did you come to New York?
I’m from Potomac, Maryland. I came to New York after college in 2008 because I knew that I wanted to be near my older sister (typical younger sister!) and that I wanted to work in fashion, so NYC was definitely the place to be.
Tell me about your journey – how did you get where you are at this exact moment (feel free to be literal or metaphorical here)
To make a long story very short, I’m where I am right now because I’ve always been obsessed with candy and have it with me at all times… it’s who I am!
If you want the longer version – My first job out of college was working for a startup contemporary clothing line, Torn by Ronny Kobo. For 8 years I grew with Ronny and her company as the Director of Marketing and Sales.
After Torn, I started rbd strategy to help build other startups, not only specific to fashion. One of my clients was Peter Tunney. I’ll never forget when he gave me a piece of his art and told me how having a piece of art that you love in your home can change the way you think and always make you happy. He was right! It also made me think about what else I wanted in my home and it was obvious from the candy on my coffee table and colorful decor in my apartment that I wanted candy on my wall somehow, someway.
I then created a piece filled with Dubble Bubble with hot pink writing on the outer glass and hung it on my wall. My friends and family all wanted one for themselves and I found myself getting really excited about different candy and color combos and loving coming up with quirky phrases to put on them… and by robynblair was born!
What is a typical day in the life of Robyn?
The past few months have been so exciting that I’ve found myself waking up earlier and earlier to answer emails and direct messages on Instagram from the night before. I usually have meetings throughout the day with potential clients, brands for collaborations or partnerships and people I was introduced to for no specific reason other than seeing what comes from it. Between meetings I work from different restaurants, finding inspiration from changing my scenery and before I know it, it’s dinner time!
All other candies are going to be canceled, what ONE candy do you keep?
Wow, this is a tough one! Sour belts!! I crave them and always want them after I eat something salty. You can always find a fresh bag of them from candy stores in my apartment at all times.
What is your favorite non-sugary indulgence?
The funny thing is I typically tend to lean more savory than sweet! My non-sugary indulgence would be pasta. I love it so much and could eat it every night!
Your art pieces are showing up in chic living rooms all over NYC, what are some of your home décor tips?
Less is more. Find that one piece (or two) that you love and make that the statement piece that you build around. It’s also a great way to add a pop of color into any room.
If you could have one piece of artwork in the world, what would it be?
A Damien Hirst spot painting! I love how it’s so vibrant and colorful!
What are some of your other hobbies?
I love to try new things! Whether it be a new restaurant, art gallery, or pop up exhibit… they keep me busy and interested.
Were you always artistic? If so – what was your favorite art project you created as a child?
Yes, always! I loved art projects as a kid. One of my favorite pieces is in my parents living room that is a mixture of my drawings and cut out pictures from magazines. I love the different colors and texture in it.
Do you have a specific muse or inspirational person/figure that inspires your art?
I’m constantly inspired by my surroundings. I love going to new places and traveling, I’m finding inspiration everywhere!
What’s your favorite customizable piece? and why…
My favorite piece so far is my boxed candy. I love how the pieces don’t fit perfectly and I can intertwine so many memories of candy I have from eating them through my life. I also love mixing in small boxes of nerds and soft bags of candy to make the piece look more complete.
Have you done any pieces for celebrities / notable people? What was the best part of this experience?
I’m currently in the midst of making a piece for Iskra Lawrence. We’re doing a fun party mix of candy and it’s been an exciting process because she has a brought a lot to the table as well. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about the best phrase that is unique to her and we came up with “Life Is Sweet, Take a Big Bite.”
What’s next for Robyn Blair Art?
